Summary

High tibial osteotomy with microfractures improved patient satisfaction for medial compartment osteoarthritis in genu varum. While both treatments improved knee function, microfractures enhanced long-term patient contentment.

  • Clinical outcomes were assessed at 5 years using the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) and Lysholm scores, along with patient satisfaction.
  • Main Results:

    • Both groups showed statistically significant improvements in Lysholm and IKDC scores postoperatively, with no significant difference between groups.
    • Patient satisfaction scores were significantly higher in the HTO plus microfractures group compared to the HTO alone group at 5-year follow-up.
    • No significant preoperative differences in satisfaction were noted between the groups.

    Conclusions:

    • High tibial osteotomy is an effective treatment for varus knee with medial degenerative arthritis, particularly for active individuals.
    • Combining microfractures with high tibial osteotomy may lead to enhanced patient satisfaction in the long term.
    • Microfractures may offer additional benefits for patient-reported outcomes following HTO for medial compartment osteoarthritis.
