Serum Studies: Renal Function Tests

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare serum magnesium levels and dietary intake between overweight and normal-weight children.
  • To investigate the relationship between serum magnesium and metabolic syndrome components in pediatric subjects.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 55 overweight and 53 normal-weight children (aged 4-14).
  • Fasting serum magnesium, insulin, glucose, lipids, and dietary magnesium intake were measured and compared.

Main Results:

  • Overweight children exhibited significantly lower serum magnesium (2.12 mg/dL) than normal-weight peers (2.56 mg/dL).
  • Despite lower serum levels, overweight children had higher adjusted dietary magnesium intake (0.20 mg/kcal vs. 0.17 mg/kcal).
  • Serum magnesium showed inverse correlations with BMI, blood pressure, waist circumference, and fasting insulin.

Conclusions:

  • Overweight children have lower serum magnesium concentrations than normal-weight children.
  • This occurs even with a higher dietary intake of magnesium in overweight youth.
  • Low serum magnesium may be a marker for metabolic syndrome components in children.
