Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility of integrating Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) into providing newborn care.
  • To assess the impact of training on ASHA knowledge regarding newborn care.
  • To examine the accuracy of newborn weight measurements performed by ASHAs.

Main Methods:

  • A one-day training program followed by two refresher courses was conducted for 33 ASHAs in Faridabad, Haryana.
  • Knowledge scores were assessed at pre-training, immediately post-training, and at three and six months.
  • The proportion of home-born newborns weighed within 3 days and the accuracy of ASHA weight measurements (±250 grams) were evaluated.

Main Results:

  • ASHA knowledge scores significantly improved post-training and were sustained at six months.
  • 83% of home-born newborns were weighed within 3 days of birth.
  • Approximately 44% of ASHAs accurately weighed neonates within a 250-gram margin of the author's recorded weight.
