Vitamin D deficiency is linked to Multiple Sclerosis (MS). This study found lower Vitamin D levels in MS patients, especially during relapses, and showed Vitamin D regulates T cells, suggesting supplementation could aid MS treatment.

- Measured serum levels of 25(OH) Vitamin D and 1,25(OH)(2) Vitamin D using ELISA.
- Assessed the impact of 1,25(OH)(2) Vitamin D on T cell proliferation, cytokine production (IL-10, IL-6, IL-17), VDR expression, IDO activity, and T regulatory cell development.

- Significantly lower levels of 25(OH) Vitamin D and 1,25(OH)(2) Vitamin D were observed in RR MS patients compared to controls.
- Vitamin D levels were lower during MS relapses than during remission.
- 1,25(OH)(2) Vitamin D inhibited T cell proliferation, reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-17), increased IL-10, enhanced IDO activity, and promoted T regulatory cell expansion. T cells were found to metabolize 25(OH) Vitamin D to 1,25(OH)(2) Vitamin D.

- 1,25(OH)(2) Vitamin D plays a crucial role in maintaining T cell homeostasis in Multiple Sclerosis.
- Vitamin D deficiency is associated with MS, particularly during relapses.
- Correcting Vitamin D deficiency may be a beneficial therapeutic strategy for MS patients.
