Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans.
RSV is a retrovirus that contains two copies of a plus-strand  RNA genome. Its genome consists of four main open...

Chronic pharyngitis refers to persistent inflammation of the pharyngial mucosa.
Etiology
It often arises from persistent viral or bacterial infections affecting sinuses and tonsils.
Additional contributing factors include inadequate dental hygiene, mouth breathing, recurring tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other environmental pollutants. Allergic reactions to pollen, mold, and pet dander, chronic cough, excessive voice usage,...

Summary

This case report details the first known instance of tonsillar leiomyosarcoma in a 73-year-old male. The rare head and neck cancer presented with specific symptoms and was treated with radiotherapy.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Head and Neck Surgery
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Leiomyosarcomas are rare malignant tumors originating from smooth muscle tissue.
  • Head and neck leiomyosarcomas are exceptionally uncommon, with most cases arising from the skin or sinonasal tract.

Observation:

  • A 73-year-old man presented with hemoptysis, unilateral odynophagia, and an ulcerated, exophytic tonsillar lesion.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma of the tonsil.

Findings:

  • This represents the first reported case of tonsillar leiomyosarcoma in the English literature.
  • The patient underwent treatment with radical radiotherapy.

Implications:

  • Tonsillar leiomyosarcoma is an extremely rare entity within head and neck malignancies.
