Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of interventions for preventing lower limb soft-tissue running injuries.
  • Evaluate various preventive strategies in different running populations.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of randomized and quasi-randomized controlled trials.
  • Searched multiple databases including Cochrane, MEDLINE, and EMBASE up to January 2011.
  • Assessed risk of bias and extracted data from 25 trials involving over 30,000 participants.

Main Results:

  • No evidence found that stretching or general conditioning exercises prevent injuries.
  • Limited evidence suggests reducing running duration/frequency may decrease injuries.
  • Patellofemoral braces may prevent anterior knee pain; custom insoles may help prevent shin splints.

Conclusions:

  • The evidence base for preventing soft-tissue running injuries is very weak.
  • Most included trials had a high risk of bias.
  • More well-designed randomized controlled trials are needed, particularly in recreational runners.
