Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and compare dream characteristics in early-stage PD and TLE patients.
  • To explore the role of limbic and paralimbic structures in dream generation for these patient groups.

Main Methods:

  • Dream diaries were collected from 19 early-stage PD patients and 52 TLE patients.
  • Dreams were classified using the Hall van de Castle system.
  • Patient dreams were compared with age- and sex-matched control groups.

Main Results:

  • PD patients' dreams showed increased instances of animals, physical aggression, and a befriender, with fewer aggressors and bodily misfortunes compared to controls.
  • Dreams in PD patients with frontal dysfunction exhibited more aggressive content.
  • TLE patients reported lower dream recall, with a higher proportion of dreams featuring family and familiar settings, and lower proportions of success-related dreams.

Conclusions:

  • Dreams in PD and TLE patients exhibit significant differences from controls and share some common features.
  • Dream content analysis may offer insights into the neurobiological underpinnings of hallucinations and cognitive dysfunction in PD and TLE.
