Summary

Malignant mesothelioma (MM) survival has modestly improved over five decades in Western Australia, with earlier diagnosis contributing to gains. However, this fatal disease still shows no complete remissions despite increased medical interventions.

Background:

  • Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a fatal cancer with increasing incidence and healthcare costs.
  • Understanding survival trends and prognostic factors is crucial for managing this disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine changes in survival and identify factors affecting survival for malignant mesothelioma (MM) patients in Western Australia over five decades (up to 2005).

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of all diagnosed MM cases in Western Australia via the Mesothelioma Registry.
  • Cox regression analysis to assess associations between clinical variables (sex, age, diagnosis date/method, site, histology) and survival.
  • Clinical notes reviewed for symptom onset and performance status in a sample of cases.

Main Results:

  • Survival is inversely related to age and worse for males and peritoneal MM.
  • Sarcomatoid histology is associated with a poorer prognosis compared to epithelioid and biphasic subtypes.
