Background:

The Brazilian Society of Dermatology of the State of Sao Paulo (SBD-RESP) launched an active case-finding campaign for leprosy.
The campaign aimed to support the National Leprosy Control Program in its goal of disease elimination.
Seventeen dermatology services in Sao Paulo State participated in the initiative from May to July 2010.

Discussion:

The campaign successfully diagnosed 90 new cases of Hansen's disease among 1,718 individuals screened.
Multibacillary and paucibacillary forms were equally prevalent, with 12% of cases having a family history of leprosy.
The highest detection rates were observed in Sao Paulo city and the Presidente Prudente region.

Key Insights:

A significant number of new leprosy cases were identified through targeted screening efforts.
