A healthcare green team, Environmental Vision and Action (EVA), drove environmental improvements at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH). By blending grassroots efforts with corporate support, EVA achieved significant successes in waste reduction, energy efficiency, and staff engagement.

Background:

St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) established the Environmental Vision and Action (EVA) grassroots green team.
A balance between corporate-led projects and informal leader-driven initiatives fostered environmental success.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore the impact of a grassroots environmental initiative within a healthcare setting.
To understand how social movements theory can guide and evolve environmental stewardship programs.
To document the successful transformation of a grassroots movement into a corporate environmental program.

Main Methods:

Implementation of various environmental initiatives including waste diversion, energy efficiency, and green purchasing.
Application of social movements theory to understand and guide the grassroots movement.
Transition from a grassroots model to a corporate environmental stewardship program.

Main Results:

Successful implementation of waste diversion, energy reduction, alternative commuting, and green purchasing programs.
Increased staff engagement and awareness regarding environmental issues.
