Main Results:

  • Evidence of self-catalyzed growth of ZnO nanowires (NWs) via ZnO nanoflowers.
  • Demonstrated control over NW morphologies by kinetically controlling the deposition system.
  • High Zn composition led to strongly luminescent ZnO NWs suitable for optical imaging.

Conclusions:

  • A fundamental kinetic principle governing nanostructure mechanisms and morphology selection in non-catalyst systems was discovered.
  • The study provides insights into tailoring ZnO nanostructures for specific applications, such as optical imaging.
  • This research advances the potential of vapor deposition for large-scale nanomanufacturing.
