Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings.

Summary

Acupuncture may be an effective treatment for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. This study compared acupuncture to a waitlist control, using subjective ADHD symptom ratings.

Background:

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects 7-9% of children, with unclear origins and common side effects from conventional treatments.
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is increasingly used by parents for ADHD symptom relief.
Evidence for acupuncture's effectiveness in treating ADHD is currently insufficient.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for children with ADHD.
To compare acupuncture treatment against a waitlist control group.

Main Methods:

A randomized, controlled trial with two parallel arms: acupuncture and waitlist.
40 participants in each arm, receiving 12 acupuncture sessions over 6 weeks (acupuncture group).
Primary outcome measured by the Korean version of ADHD-Rating Scale (K-ADHD-RS) at multiple time points.

Main Results:

The study aimed to provide evidence for acupuncture's effectiveness in ADHD treatment.
Subjective measures like K-ADHD-RS were used, alongside plans for objective measures like Computerized Neurocognitive function Tests (CNT).

Conclusions:

Subjective ADHD assessments, while valid, may be influenced by placebo effects.
Objective neurocognitive assessments are crucial for future ADHD trials.
This trial seeks to establish acupuncture as a viable treatment option for ADHD.
