Summary

Pertussis toxin (PT) affects reovirus spread differently based on inoculation route. PT inhibits reovirus spread from the gut to lymph nodes but enhances blood-borne virus spread to lymph nodes.

Background:

  • Bacterial products can influence viral infections.
  • Pertussis toxin (PT), also known as lymphocytosis promoting factor (LPF), affects lymphoid cell circulation.
  • Enteric reovirus infection involves initial entry into Peyer's patches (PP) and spread to mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of PT/LPF on enteric reovirus infection.
  • To determine if PT/LPF modulates reovirus early infection stages after peroral inoculation.

Main Methods:

  • Adult BALB/c mice were pretreated with PT/LPF.
  • Mice were inoculated with reovirus type 1 via intragastric or intravenous routes.
  • Reovirus spread to PP, MLN, and spleen was assessed.
