Summary

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is linked to malignant lymphoma. While HCV RNA levels decreased post-treatment, higher levels in resistant or recurrent cases suggest HCV impacts lymphoma prognosis.

Background:

  • Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a known cause of hepatic cancer.
  • HCV is also implicated in the development of malignant lymphoma.
  • Investigating the characteristics of HCV-associated lymphomas is crucial for understanding disease progression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the characteristics of malignant lymphoma cases that test positive for anti-HCV antibody (HCV-Ab).
  • To explore the correlation between HCV presence and treatment outcomes in lymphoma patients.

Main Methods:

  • Pathological examination of lymphoid tissues from HCV-Ab positive malignant lymphoma cases.
  • HCV-Ab staining on lymphoid tissues.
  • Quantification of HCV-RNA levels pre- and post-treatment.

Main Results:

  • Pathological examination was performed on 13 of 14 HCV-positive cases.
  • Ten cases showed positive HCV-Ab staining in lymphoid tissues.
  • No significant correlation was found between HCV staining intensity and treatment recurrence or resistance.
  • HCV-RNA levels consistently decreased post-treatment, but treatment-resistant/recurrent cases showed higher post-treatment levels compared to pre-treatment levels.

Conclusions:

  • HCV may accelerate oncogenesis through direct interaction with B cells.
  • HCV infection might indirectly influence the prognosis of lymphoma.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the precise mechanisms of HCV in lymphoma development and progression.
