  • Twelve healthy males underwent three sessions: graded exercise test, mental challenge-control, and mental challenge-exercise.
  • Measures included state anxiety, cardiovascular variables, and hormone levels (epinephrine, norepinephrine, cortisol).
  • Repeated-measures ANOVAs analyzed data across conditions and time points.

Main Results:

  • State anxiety increased after the mental challenge in both conditions.
  • Cortisol levels rose significantly post-mental challenge and remained elevated during exercise in the mental challenge-exercise condition.
  • Epinephrine and norepinephrine levels did not significantly change in either condition.

  • A preceding mental challenge can potentiate the cortisol response to subsequent physical exertion.
