Tuberculous peritonitis, a rare tuberculosis form, presents unique sonographic findings. These include ascites, delicate septations, and peritoneal thickening, aiding diagnosis when other conditions are considered.

Background:

Tuberculous peritonitis is an uncommon manifestation of tuberculosis.
Specific radiologic features of tuberculous peritonitis are not well-defined.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the sonographic features of tuberculous peritonitis.
To aid in the prospective diagnosis of tuberculous peritonitis.

Main Methods:

Prospective sonographic evaluation of 4 patients with tuberculous peritonitis.

Main Results:

Sonographic findings included free ascites.
Multiple, fine, delicate septations and incomplete mobile strands of fibrin were observed.
Peritoneal thickening and nodularity were noted.

Sonography can identify characteristic features of tuberculous peritonitis.
Differential diagnosis should include peritoneal carsinomatosis, mesothelioma, pyogenic peritonitis, and hemoperitoneum.
