Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Oncology

Context:

  • Jugulotympanic paragangliomas are rare tumors.
  • Surgical approaches vary, impacting outcomes.
  • Long-term follow-up is crucial for assessing treatment efficacy.

Purpose:

  • To analyze outcomes of surgical interventions for jugulotympanic paragangliomas.
  • To compare different surgical approaches and their associated complications.
  • To evaluate the role of preoperative embolization and stereotactic radiosurgery.

Summary:

  • A retrospective analysis of 21 patients with jugulotympanic paragangliomas treated between 1999 and 2011.
  • Surgical treatment was performed in 20 cases, with various approaches utilized.
  • Postoperative complications included facial nerve palsy and hearing loss; no surgical recurrences were observed over 12 years.

Impact:

  • Surgery is confirmed as the elective therapy for jugulotympanic paragangliomas.
  • Preoperative embolization reduces surgical time and bleeding.
  • Stereotactic radiotherapy is less effective in complete tumor eradication.
