Electrogastrography abnormalities appear early in children with diabetes type 1

Gastric myoelectrical activity abnormalities, detected early in diabetic children, are linked to high blood glucose levels. These changes are not consistently found over time and do not indicate diabetic autonomic neuropathy.

- Diabetic children showed increased preprandial bradygastria and decreased normogastria compared to controls.
- The normogastric power ratio was significantly higher in diabetic children.
- Higher acute hyperglycemia correlated with postprandial bradygastria; longer diabetes duration increased EGG abnormality risk.
Conclusions:
- EGG abnormalities are present early in many diabetic children and linked to acute hyperglycemia.
- These GMA changes are not consistently observed during follow-up and are unrelated to HbA1c or fructosamine.
- Diabetic autonomic neuropathy is unlikely to be the primary cause of EGG abnormalities in this pediatric cohort.
