Background:

  • Orbital floor fractures present significant challenges in plastic surgery.
  • Post-traumatic enophthalmos, the backward displacement of the eye, is a common complication.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe a method for reconstructing the orbital floor slope to prevent post-traumatic enophthalmos.
  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of this technique in patients with orbital floor fractures.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-three patients with orbital floor fractures underwent orbital floor slope reconstruction using poly-l/d-lactide sheets.
  • A transconjunctival approach under general anesthesia was employed for all surgeries.

Main Results:

  • Preoperatively, 69% of patients had enophthalmos and 36% had diplopia.
  • Postoperatively, 86% of enophthalmos cases and 83% of diplopia cases were resolved.
  • No cases of impaired visual acuity were reported.

Conclusions:

  • Orbital floor reconstruction considering the orbital floor slope is a safe and reliable method.
  • This technique effectively prevents post-traumatic enophthalmos and reduces complications.
