Overview
In-situ Hybridization02:31

In-situ Hybridization

In situ hybridization (ISH) is a technique used to detect and localize specific DNA or RNA molecules in cells, tissue, or tissue sections using a labeled probe. The technique was first used in 1969 for the investigation of nucleic acids. It is currently an essential tool in scientific research and clinical settings, especially for diagnostic purposes.
Types of probes and labels
A probe is a complementary strand of DNA or RNA that binds to corresponding nucleotide sequences in a cell. Many...

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Internal autoscopy is a rare visual hallucination.
  • Historically reported primarily in young, female patients with hysteria.
  • Limited understanding of its occurrence in elderly populations or other diagnoses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe a case of internal autoscopy in an elderly male patient.
  • To discuss the differential diagnosis and phenomenology of this rare hallucination.
  • To propose a cognitive or ideational basis for internal autoscopy.

Main Methods:

  • Case report of a 70-year-old male patient.
  • Clinical observation and phenomenological analysis.
  • Differential diagnosis exploration.

Main Results:

  • A case of internal autoscopy was observed in a 70-year-old male patient with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
  • The patient experienced visual hallucinations consistent with internal autoscopy.
  • Phenomenological and diagnostic considerations were explored.

Conclusions:

  • Internal autoscopy can occur in elderly males with depression, challenging previous assumptions.
  • The phenomenon may represent a cognitive or ideational disturbance manifesting as a perceptual experience.
  • Further research is needed to understand the full spectrum of internal autoscopy.
