Anatomy of the Ear01:16

Anatomy of the Ear

11.9K
Auditory sensation, commonly called hearing, involves the transformation of sonic waves into neural impulses facilitated by the structures of the auditory organ. The prominent, flesh-like structure on the side of the head, called the auricle, directs sound waves towards the auditory canal. The auricle is often mislabeled as the pinna, a term more aligned with mobile structures like a feline's external ear. The auditory canal penetrates the cranium via the external auditory meatus of the...

Fractures: Bone Repair

5.5K
Treatment for a fracture is based on the type of break, the bone affected, and the patient's age.
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the...

Hearing

57.4K
When we hear a sound, our nervous system is detecting sound waves—pressure waves of mechanical energy traveling through a medium. The frequency of the wave is perceived as pitch, while the amplitude is perceived as loudness.

Characteristics of Life

262.5K
Biology is a natural science that studies life and living organisms, including their structure, function, development, interactions, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy. The field's scope is extensive and divided into several specialized disciplines, such as anatomy, physiology, ethology, genetics, and many more. All living things share a few key traits, including cellular organization, heritable genetic material and the ability to adapt/evolve, metabolism to regulate energy needs, the...

Hair Cells01:22

Hair Cells

45.1K
Hair cells are the sensory receptors of the auditory system—they transduce mechanical sound waves into electrical energy that the nervous system can understand. Hair cells are located in the organ of Corti within the cochlea of the inner ear, between the basilar and tectorial membranes. The actual sensory receptors are called inner hair cells. The outer hair cells serve other functions, such as sound amplification in the cochlea, and are not discussed in detail here.

Summary

Cochlear implants offer a successful treatment for profound hearing loss after bilateral inner ear fractures. Bilateral cochlear implantation is recommended to maximize benefits for these patients.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Audiology

Background:

  • Inner ear fractures, particularly bilateral ones, can lead to profound hearing loss.
  • Cochlear implantation is a potential restorative treatment for sensorineural hearing loss.
  • Evaluating cochlear implant outcomes in this specific patient cohort is crucial.

Observation:

  • A retrospective review of five patients with profound hearing loss post-bilateral temporal bone fractures who received cochlear implants.
  • Six ears were implanted, with all patients experiencing uncomplicated recovery.
  • No instances of facial nerve stimulation were reported post-implantation.

Findings:

  • All patients successfully integrated their cochlear implants into daily life.
  • One patient opted for bilateral cochlear implantation to enhance auditory rehabilitation.
  • The study demonstrates positive functional outcomes and patient acceptance.

Implications:

  • Cochlear implantation is a viable and recommended option for profound hearing loss resulting from bilateral inner ear fractures.
  • Bilateral cochlear implantation may offer superior benefits for patients with bilateral inner ear damage.
  • Further research into long-term outcomes and bilateral strategies is warranted.
