Summary

Optic nerve head drusen (ONHD) are rare in Black patients, affecting only 5.1% of those studied. Visual field defects are common in Black individuals with ONHD, regardless of whether the drusen are buried or exposed.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of optic nerve head drusen (ONHD) in Black patients.
  • To describe the clinical, ophthalmoscopic, and visual field findings in this patient group.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart review of patients diagnosed with ONHD between 1989 and 2010.
  • Inclusion criteria: Black race, confirmed ONHD via funduscopy or B-scan ultrasonography.
  • Analysis of demographic, clinical, and perimetric data.

  • 10 out of 196 (5.1%) patients with ONHD were Black.
  • Most Black patients with ONHD had small, cupless optic nerve heads.
  • Visual field defects were prevalent, occurring in 80% of eyes with exposed ONHD and 72.7% with buried ONHD.
