Abstract:
In spite of rare incidence, cystic intracranial meningiomas deserve interest due to difficulties in correct preoperative diagnosis. Authors present a case report of a patient with cystic meningioma mimicking astrocytoma. In addition, review of literature is performed.
Insights
Cystic intracranial meningiomas are rare but challenging to diagnose before surgery. This case report highlights a cystic meningioma that mimicked astrocytoma, emphasizing the need for careful preoperative evaluation.
Area of Science:
- Neurosurgery
- Neuroradiology
- Neuropathology
Background:
- Cystic intracranial meningiomas are uncommon tumors presenting diagnostic challenges.
- Preoperative differentiation from other cystic brain lesions, such as astrocytoma, is often difficult.
Observation:
- A case of a cystic meningioma is presented, which radiologically mimicked an astrocytoma.
- The patient's clinical presentation and imaging findings are detailed.
Findings:
- Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of cystic meningioma.
- Literature review underscores the rarity and diagnostic complexities of these lesions.
Implications:
- Accurate preoperative diagnosis of cystic meningiomas is crucial for appropriate surgical planning.
- Increased awareness and improved diagnostic modalities may enhance patient outcomes for these rare tumors.
