Caffeine consumption can trigger panic attacks and anxiety in individuals with panic disorder. This review of eight studies confirms a link between caffeine and increased anxiety symptoms in this population.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Pharmacology
- Clinical Psychology
Background:
- Panic disorder is a debilitating anxiety condition.
- Caffeine is a widely consumed stimulant with known psychoactive effects.
- The anxiogenic potential of caffeine in panic disorder requires thorough investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review studies examining caffeine's role in inducing panic attacks.
- To evaluate the anxiogenic effects of the caffeine challenge test in panic disorder patients.
Main Methods:
- Systematic literature search of PubMed, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, and ISI Web of Knowledge.
- Inclusion of eight randomized, double-blind, oral caffeine administration studies.
- Analysis of studies investigating panic attacks and/or anxiogenic effects.
Main Results:
- All eight reviewed studies indicated a positive association between caffeine and anxiogenic effects.
- A significant link was observed between caffeine intake and the induction of panic attacks in susceptible individuals.
- High percentages of participant loss during follow-up were noted across the studies (14.3%–73.1%).
Conclusions:
- Caffeine acts as a trigger for panic attacks and anxiety in patients diagnosed with panic disorder.
- The caffeine challenge test is a relevant tool for understanding caffeine's anxiogenic properties in this population.
- Further research should address confounding factors and improve participant retention in such studies.
