Summary

Migraine is not a neurologic manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or multiple sclerosis (MS). Previous studies may have overestimated migraine prevalence due to methodological issues.

  • Statistical analysis was performed to compare headache prevalence, duration, and severity across groups.
  • Main Results:

    • Migraine prevalence was similar across SLE patients (21%), MS patients (23%), and controls (22%).
    • Chronic tension-type headache was more prevalent in SLE patients (12.5%) and MS patients (8.3%) than in controls (1.4%).
    • No associations were found between headache types and disease activity or autoantibodies in SLE or MS patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Migraine is unlikely to be a neurologic manifestation of systemic or organ-specific autoimmunity.
    • Previous findings of increased migraine prevalence in autoimmune diseases may be attributed to methodological limitations.
    • Anxiety and impaired quality of life were more common in SLE patients regardless of headache presence.
