Summary

The Candy Smell Test (CST) reliably assesses retronasal olfaction, correlating well with established methods. It provides clear cutoff points for diagnosing smell dysfunction, including normosmia, hyposmia, and anosmia.

Background:

The Candy Smell Test (CST) offers a novel approach to evaluating olfaction by focusing on retronasal odor perception.
Unlike traditional tests, CST simulates aroma perception during eating and swallowing, relevant to real-life experiences.

Purpose of the Study:

To clinically validate the CST against the established Sniffin' Sticks test in patients with olfactory dysfunction.
To determine reliable cutoff points for normosmia, hyposmia, and anosmia using the CST.

Main Methods:

Olfactory performance was assessed in 96 patients and 71 controls using the 23-item CST and the extended Sniffin' Sticks test.
Participants found the CST procedures easy to understand and engaging.
