Background:

  • Chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) has been proposed as a cause of multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • This hypothesis suggests cerebral venous congestion contributes to MS pathogenesis.
  • The link between CCSVI and MS remains controversial and requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of CCSVI in patients with multiple sclerosis.
  • To compare venous flow patterns in MS patients versus healthy controls.
  • To evaluate the diagnostic utility of extracranial Doppler for detecting CCSVI in MS.

Main Methods:

  • Color extracranial Doppler examinations were performed on 27 MS patients and 32 healthy controls.
  • Four parameters of abnormal venous flow were assessed: absent flow, reflux, stenosis in internal jugular veins (IJVs), and reverted postural control.
  • Statistical analysis compared the incidence of these parameters between the two groups.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in the prevalence of one, two, or three parameters of abnormal venous flow was found between MS patients and healthy controls.
  • Blood flow direction in the IJVs was normal in all participants, including one healthy subject.
  • The study failed to identify a distinct venous flow pattern characteristic of MS patients.

Conclusions:

  • The study found no evidence supporting an increased prevalence of CCSVI in MS patients.
  • A typical venous flow pattern associated with MS was not observed.
