Summary
A rare canine mammary tumor exhibited sebaceous metaplasia, a change where sebaceous gland cells form within the tumor. This complex adenoma highlights unusual differentiation in canine mammary gland neoplasms.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Pathology
- Canine Neoplasia
- Mammary Gland Tumors
Background:
- Complex adenomas are common mammary tumors in female dogs.
- Sebaceous metaplasia is a less common differentiation pathway in these tumors.
Observation:
- A 9-year-old Miniature Pinscher presented with a complex adenoma of the left fourth mammary gland.
- Histopathological examination revealed tubular and ductular structures with myoepithelial-like cells and sebaceous gland components.
Findings:
- Well-differentiated sebocytes, identified by Sudan III staining, were surrounded by basaloid cells.
- Immunohistochemistry showed cytokeratin AE1/AE3 expression in both epithelial and sebaceous-differentiated cells.
Implications:
- This case expands the understanding of differentiation potential in canine mammary adenomas.
- It underscores the importance of detailed histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis for accurate diagnosis.

The Mammary Glands
The female breast is a hemispheric projection of variable size positioned anterior to the pectoralis major and serratus anterior muscles. A fascia layer composed of dense, irregular connective tissue connects it to these muscles.
Each breast features a pigmented projection known as the nipple, through which milk emerges via closely spaced openings of ducts, referred to as lactiferous ducts. Surrounding the nipple is a circular pigmented area of skin named the areola, which appears rough due to...

Accessory Structures of the Skin: Sebaceous Glands
A sebaceous gland is a type of oil gland found almost all over the skin ( except palms and soles) and helps lubricate and waterproof the skin and hair. Most sebaceous glands are associated with hair follicles. They generate and excrete sebum, a mixture of lipids, onto the skin surface, thereby naturally lubricating the dry and dead layer of keratinized cells of the stratum corneum, keeping it pliable.
These glands that produce the oils on the skin and hair are holocrine glands. The mature...
