Summary

Gastroesophageal scintigraphy is effective for detecting reflux. Visual interpretation demonstrated superior accuracy and inter-observer agreement compared to time activity curves and condensed images in a study of 49 children.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic efficiency of different scintigraphic interpretation methods for GER.
  • To assess the impact of these methods on inter-reader agreement.

Main Methods:

  • 49 children with suspected GER underwent scintigraphy.
  • Images were interpreted using visual assessment, time activity curves, and condensed images.
  • Readings were performed by specialists and a resident, with consensus for discordant results.

Main Results:

  • Scintigraphy identified GER in 27 out of 49 children.
  • Visual interpretation showed higher sensitivity, positive predictive value, and specificity.
  • Inter-observer reproducibility (κ value) was highest for visual interpretation (0.910).

Conclusions:

  • Gastroesophageal scintigraphy is a reliable method for diagnosing GER.
  • Visual interpretation is the most accurate and reproducible method among those evaluated.
  • Discordant findings were often associated with low-grade, low-intensity reflux in the distal esophagus.
