Summary

Fractionated plasma separation and adsorption (FPSA) liver support showed no overall survival benefit in acute-on-chronic liver failure patients. However, FPSA improved survival in specific subgroups, including those with hepatorenal syndrome or high MELD scores.

Background:

  • Fractionated plasma separation and adsorption (FPSA) is an extracorporeal albumin dialysis method.
  • FPSA effectively removes protein-bound and water-soluble toxins without external albumin.
  • Previous studies suggest FPSA may be more effective than MARS for detoxification.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of FPSA therapy compared to standard medical treatment in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure.
  • To assess survival rates at 1 and 3 months post-treatment.
  • To investigate potential survival benefits in specific patient subgroups.

Main Methods:

  • A large, randomized-controlled multicenter trial (HELIOS) was conducted.
