Urinary Tract Infection III: Diagnostic Studies and Interprofessional Care

A healthcare provider can diagnose a urinary tract infection (UTI) through several methods:Medical History and Symptoms: The provider will take a detailed medical history and ask about symptoms such as frequent urination, burning sensation during urination, and lower abdominal pain.Urinalysis: A clean-catch urine sample is collected in a sterile container and tested for the presence of bacteria, white blood cells (leukocytes), nitrites, blood, and protein. The presence of leukocytes and...

Urodynamic Studies: Uroflowmetry

Uroflowmetry is a non-invasive urodynamic test designed to measure various aspects of urination, including volume, flow rate, and the time to void. This test is crucial for diagnosing and assessing conditions such as bladder outlet obstruction, bladder dysfunction, incomplete bladder emptying, incontinence, and urinary tract blockages caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and urethral strictures.Pre-Test Instructions:Before a uroflowmetry test, patients are typically advised to drink...

Summary

A single educational program for behavioral modification effectively treated most patients with nocturnal polyuria (NPU). Repetitive programs were not necessary, as one intervention significantly improved nocturia and quality of life.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Behavioral Medicine

Background:

  • Nocturnal polyuria (NPU) is a common condition affecting nocturia.
  • Behavioral modification programs aim to improve bladder storage and reduce nighttime voids.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if a repetitive education program for behavioral modification is necessary for patients with nocturnal polyuria (NPU).

Main Methods:

  • A prospective single-arm study analyzed 82 NPU patients.
  • A 30-minute systematized behavioral modification program (SBMP) was developed, including education on urine storage, fluid regulation, and nurse discussion.
  • Patients received a second SBMP if nocturia persisted.

Main Results:

  • The first SBMP significantly improved nocturia, quality of life, and nocturnal bladder capacity.
  • Nocturnal voids and nocturia index also showed significant improvement.
  • A second SBMP provided no additional significant benefits for most patients; 78.5% were satisfied after the first intervention.

Conclusions:

  • A single session of the systematized behavioral modification program (SBMP) is sufficient for most patients with nocturnal polyuria (NPU).
  • While a single intervention is effective, reinforcement SBMP can benefit a subset of patients.
  • Improvements in quality of life may stem from reduced nighttime awakenings rather than solely decreased urine volume.
