Medication therapy management (MTM) learning activities boosted student confidence and knowledge in providing MTM services. However, the simulated MTM activities did not increase students' intention to provide these services in the future.
Area of Science:
- Pharmacy education
- Health professions education
- Behavioral science
Background:
- Medication Therapy Management (MTM) is crucial for optimizing patient outcomes.
- Understanding factors influencing healthcare providers' intention to deliver MTM is essential.
- The Theory of Planned Behavior provides a framework to assess behavioral intentions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effect of simulated MTM learning activities on pharmacy students' confidence and intention to provide MTM.
- To assess changes in students' perceived behavioral control and subjective norms regarding MTM delivery.
Main Methods:
- An MTM curriculum integrating lectures and active learning was implemented in a pharmacotherapy laboratory course.
- A validated survey based on the Theory of Planned Behavior assessed student confidence and intent.
- Pre- and post-intervention survey data were analyzed.
Main Results:
- Confidence in MTM service provision, including billing and documentation, significantly increased (p < 0.00).
- Perceived behavioral control and subjective norms related to MTM improved significantly (p < 0.05).
- The percentage of students feeling knowledgeable and skilled in MTM rose from 42% to 82%.
Conclusions:
- Simulated MTM activities effectively enhanced pharmacy students' knowledge, confidence, and relevant behavioral beliefs.
- Despite increased confidence and improved behavioral control/norms, students' intention to provide future MTM services did not change.
- Further strategies may be needed to translate enhanced confidence into actual MTM service provision intention.
