Background:

  • A prototype forward-viewing instrument was developed for therapeutic endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA).
  • The clinical utility of this novel forward-viewing echo endoscope was evaluated, primarily for diagnostic EUS-FNA procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the clinical usefulness of a prototype forward-viewing echo endoscope for diagnostic and therapeutic EUS-FNA.
  • To compare the diagnostic accuracy of the forward-viewing scope with a conventional oblique-viewing scope.

Main Methods:

  • The prototype forward-viewing echo endoscope was utilized in 47 consecutive patients over 15 months.
  • Diagnostic EUS-FNA was performed in 38 patients, with accuracy compared to matched reference patients using an oblique-viewing scope.

  • The forward-viewing scope demonstrates significant potential for both diagnostic and therapeutic EUS-guided interventions.
