Summary

Robotic partial nephrectomy (RPN) is a feasible surgical option for small renal tumors. This initial study of 25 patients demonstrated good outcomes with no positive margins or mortality.

Background:

Renal tumors require surgical intervention, with partial nephrectomy being the gold standard for preserving renal function.
Robotic partial nephrectomy (RPN) offers potential advantages in minimally invasive renal tumor removal.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the initial experience and feasibility of robotic partial nephrectomy (RPN).
To assess the outcomes of RPN in a consecutive series of patients with renal tumors.

Main Methods:

A series of 25 consecutive patients underwent RPN using the da Vinci S HD robotic system.
Transperitoneal approach with total renal hilum control or selective parenchymal compression was employed.
Data on operative time, ischemia time, blood loss, complications, and hospital stay were collected.

Main Results:

Mean operative time was 117.6 minutes and mean warm ischemia time was 20.2 minutes.
Mean tumor size was 3.25 cm; 19 cases were renal cell carcinoma, 6 were benign.
20% of patients experienced complications (primarily intraoperative bleeding); no conversions, positive margins, or mortality were observed.

Conclusions:

Robotic partial nephrectomy (RPN) is a feasible surgical approach for small renal tumors.
The initial experience suggests RPN can be performed safely with favorable oncological and perioperative outcomes.
