Regulation of Water Intake01:25

Regulation of Water Intake

Osmolality refers to the number of solute particles per kilogram of solvent in a solution. Plasma osmolality specifically indicates the total number of solute particles per kilogram of water in blood plasma. This value reflects the body's hydration status and is tightly regulated through mechanisms controlling water intake and output. While water consumption is a conscious decision, the body has intrinsic regulatory systems to maintain fluid balance. Dehydration, a state of water deficit...
Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Urinary Tract Calculi IV: Nutrition Therapy and Prevention

Management of renal calculi focuses on effective strategies like tailored nutrition and hydration therapy. Adjusting diet and fluid intake reduces stone formation and recurrence, making these interventions simple yet powerful in kidney stone prevention and management.Understanding Kidney StonesKidney stones form when calcium, oxalate, uric acid, and cystine concentrate and crystallize in urine. Factors contributing to their formation include genetic predisposition, certain medical conditions,...
Mineral, Vitamin and Water Absorption01:27

Mineral, Vitamin and Water Absorption

Electrolytes are essential minerals and ions primarily obtained from the diet and absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract. Most electrolytes are absorbed in the small intestine. While the absorption of iron and calcium primarily occurs in the duodenum, calcium is also absorbed in the jejunum and ileum. In these regions, passive diffusion contributes to its absorption alongside active transport mechanisms in the duodenum. These ions can exit the enterocytes through specialized active...
Regulation of Food Intake01:30

Regulation of Food Intake

Short-term regulation of food intake primarily involves neural signals from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, blood nutrient levels, and GI tract hormones. Communication between the gut and brain via vagal nerve fibers plays a significant role in evaluating the contents of the gut. Clinical studies have shown that protein ingestion produces a more prolonged response in these nerve fibers compared to an equivalent amount of glucose. Additionally, the activation of stretch receptors caused by GI...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Nutrition Education
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • High prevalence of soft drink consumption among Lebanese students (33% in grades 7-9).
  • Observational data indicates insufficient water intake among students.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To promote water consumption over soft drinks in elementary students.
  • To enhance knowledge, self-efficacy, and behavior regarding water and soft drink choices.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot intervention, Jarrib Baleha, involved 110 students in grades 3-4.
  • Four interactive sessions based on the Health Belief Model were conducted over two weeks.
  • Pre- and post-intervention questionnaires assessed knowledge, attitudes, and behavior.

Main Results:

  • Significant increase in knowledge about water and soft drinks (p=0.000).
  • Improved student confidence in choosing water over soft drinks (p<0.05).
  • Increased daily water consumption (27.7% to 59.1%) and decreased soft drink intake (25.5% to 57.6%).

Conclusions:

  • The Jarrib Baleha intervention shows positive results in promoting healthy hydration habits.
  • The program is recommended for wider implementation in schools.
  • A comprehensive approach to school nutrition and more robust evaluation designs are suggested.
