Physical Assessment of the Respiratory Tract II: Palpation01:24

Physical Assessment of the Respiratory Tract II: Palpation

Physical assessment of the respiratory tract is critical in identifying potential health issues. One key component of this assessment is palpation, a technique healthcare providers use to assess the body for abnormalities. This content explores the method of palpation in evaluating the respiratory tract, focusing on thoracic palpation and tactile fremitus.
Thoracic Palpation
Thoracic palpation detects tenderness, masses, lesions, respiratory excursions, and vocal fremitus. The nurse assesses...

Physical Assessment of the Respiratory Tract I: Health History

Physical assessment of the respiratory tract is critical to patient care. It allows healthcare professionals to identify and manage various respiratory conditions. The process involves a combination of subjective and objective data collection.
Subjective Data
Subjective data provides vital information about the patient's health history and symptoms. This data is typically collected through interviews in which patients describe their experiences, symptoms, and concerns.
Health history and key...

Pulmonary Function Tests

Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs)
Pulmonary Function Tests are crucial diagnostic tools for assessing respiratory function, particularly in patients with chronic respiratory disorders. They comprehensively evaluate lung volumes, ventilatory function, breathing mechanics, diffusion, and gas exchange. These tests help diagnose pulmonary diseases and play a significant role in monitoring disease progression, evaluating disability, and assessing response to therapy.
PFTs involve using a spirometer, a...

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease-IV: Assessement and Diagnostic Studies

Assessing and diagnosing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) involves a detailed approach that includes a comprehensive review of medical history, physical examination, and a variety of diagnostic tests. This thorough evaluation is essential to ensure an accurate diagnosis and guide effective management strategies.

Assessment of Respiration01:23

Assessment of Respiration

The respiratory system's basic structures and primary functions lay the foundation for nurses' comprehensive respiratory assessments. This assessment includes subjective and objective data to gauge the patient's respiratory health.
Subjective Assessment: Nurses interview the patient to gather information directly during the subjective assessment. It includes questions about the individual's medical history, medications, and symptoms, focusing on past respiratory conditions like asthma or COPD,...

Sputum Studies I: Gram Stain, cytology, and Acid-fast smear and culture

Sputum studies are a critical part of diagnosing and treating numerous respiratory conditions. These studies involve obtaining sputum samples for analysis to identify pathogenic organisms and assess the presence of abnormal cells indicative of malignant conditions. This lesson will delve into three fundamental sputum studies: Gram Stain, Cytology, and Acid-fast Smear and Culture.
Gram Stain
The Gram Stain is an integral part of sputum studies. It involves the staining of sputum, which permits...

Area of Science:

  • Integrative Medicine
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • Phlegm Pattern (PP) is a key concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
  • A validated instrument is needed to assess the severity of PP.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the reliability and validity of the Phlegm Pattern Questionnaire (PPQ).
  • To establish PPQ as a self-rating instrument for PP severity.

Main Methods:

  • A total of 292 normal subjects and 61 inpatients completed the PPQ.
  • Concurrent validity was assessed using the Profile of Mood States (POMS) and Chalder Fatigue Scale (CFS).
  • Sensitivity and specificity were determined using clinician diagnoses for inpatients.

Main Results:

  • The PPQ demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency (α=0.902–0.919) and concurrent validity.
  • Principal component analysis extracted six factors, explaining 58.9% of the variance.
  • Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed high sensitivity (83.78%) and specificity (83.33%) with an optimal cut-off score of five.

Conclusions:

  • The Phlegm Pattern Questionnaire (PPQ) is a reliable and valid self-rating instrument.
  • PPQ can be effectively used to estimate the severity of Phlegm Patterns in clinical practice.
