Mechanical Systems

Mechanical systems are analogous to to electrical networks where springs and masses play similar roles to inductors and capacitors, respectively. A viscous damper in mechanical systems functions similarly to a resistor in electrical networks, dissipating energy. The forces acting on a mass in such systems include an applied force in the direction of motion, counteracted by forces from the spring, a viscous damper, and the mass's acceleration. This interplay of forces is mathematically described...

Summary

A new virtual isocentric aiming device (VIAD) improves K-wire insertion accuracy and reduces radiation exposure during minimally invasive fracture fixation. This innovative tool offers a more precise and safer alternative to traditional freehand methods.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Medical device innovation
  • Surgical simulation

Background:

  • Minimally invasive fracture fixation is challenging due to complex anatomy and soft tissues.
  • This complexity increases the risk of implant malposition and radiation exposure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the practicability and accuracy of a novel virtual isocentric aiming device (VIAD).
  • To compare the VIAD against the traditional freehand K-wire insertion method.

Main Methods:

  • Forty simulated bone blocks with reference wires were used.
  • Untrained and experienced surgeons performed K-wire insertions using both VIAD and freehand techniques.
  • 3-D precision data from CT scans and clinical parameters were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • VIAD-guided K-wires showed significantly lower deviation angles compared to freehand.
  • The VIAD reduced image intensifier plane changes and drill trials for both surgeons.
  • A trend towards reduced displacement values was observed with the VIAD.

Conclusions:

  • The VIAD offers increased precision and reduced radiation exposure.
  • It is a less invasive, useful, and cost-effective alternative to the freehand method.
