Background:

Urethral catheterization is the standard for bladder volume measurement.
Catheterization poses risks including patient discomfort, urethral trauma, and urinary tract infections.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate a portable ultrasound instrument for noninvasive bladder volume determination.
To compare ultrasound measurements with standard catheterization volumes.

Main Methods:

A portable ultrasound device was used for 164 bladder volume determinations.
Digital readouts from the ultrasound were correlated with volumes obtained via urethral catheterization.

Main Results:

The portable ultrasound instrument demonstrated a strong correlation with catheterized volumes (r² = 0.79).
