Referrals for male breast gynecomastia have significantly increased, particularly in young men. While core biopsy is now preferred for unilateral cases, most patients require reassurance and psychological support rather than surgery.
Area of Science:
- Andrology
- Endocrinology
- General Surgery
Background:
- Gynecomastia is the most frequent benign male breast condition, representing up to 80% of male breast referrals.
- The study aimed to analyze trends in gynecomastia referrals and their clinical practice implications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify changes in the volume of gynecomastia referrals.
- To assess the impact of these changes on clinical management and practice.
Main Methods:
- Patient data was extracted from two prospective databases.
- Diagnosis was confirmed through clinical evaluation, ultrasound scans (USS), and/or histology.
Main Results:
- A significant rise in male patients referred and diagnosed with gynecomastia was observed.
- Gynecomastia prevalence was highest in males under twenty.
- Core biopsy (CB) emerged as the preferred histological method for unilateral cases, with no change in surgical intervention rates.
Conclusions:
- The majority of men diagnosed with gynecomastia seek reassurance regarding its benign nature.
- Psychological support should be integrated into the treatment plan for affected individuals.

Hormonal Control of the Ovarian Cycle
Before puberty, the hypothalamus releases GnRH in a low frequency, low amplitude pulsatile manner. This along with the immature hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis activity, results in low estrogen levels and the absence of a fully functional ovarian cycle. At puberty, GnRH secretion increases in both frequency and...
