Summary

The Nucleus Straight Research Array (SRA) cochlear implant significantly improved speech recognition in quiet and noise for patients with varying residual hearing. High hearing preservation was achieved using the round window surgical technique with the SRA implant.

  • Monosyllabic word recognition and hearing thresholds assessed at 4 and 13 months post-implantation.

    • Significant speech recognition improvements observed in all groups (>20 percentage points).
    • Average scores at 4 months: 61.7% in quiet, 46.5% in 10 dB SNR noise (vs. 34.4% and 10.6% preoperatively).
    • High hearing preservation noted; median increase in thresholds was 15 dB up to 13 months.

    Conclusions:

    • The SRA cochlear implant significantly enhances speech recognition for individuals with diverse residual low-frequency hearing.
