Ovine dermatosparaxis, a genetic skin fragility disorder, was identified in White Dorper lambs in New Zealand. Genetic testing confirmed the mutation responsible for this condition in affected lambs.

A Versatile Model of Hard Tick Infestation on Laboratory Rabbits

Background:

  • Dermatosparaxis is a heritable connective tissue disorder affecting sheep, characterized by fragile skin.
  • Previous cases have been reported internationally, but its presence in New Zealand's White Dorper sheep population was unconfirmed.

Observation:

  • Two young White Dorper lambs presented with severe skin fragility, including large tears, degloving injuries, and separation of skin from underlying tissues.
  • Post-mortem examinations revealed extensive skin damage, subcutaneous edema, and histological evidence of dermal collagen abnormalities.

Findings:

  • Histological analysis showed diffuse hyalinisation of dermal collagen and granulation tissue, indicative of chronic skin separation.
  • Genetic analysis of hair follicles from one lamb was homozygous for the mutation causing ovine dermatosparaxis.

Implications:

  • This study confirms the presence of the dermatosparaxis mutation in White Dorper sheep within New Zealand.
  • Veterinarians should consider dermatosparaxis in the differential diagnosis for lambs exhibiting extreme skin fragility, particularly those with White Dorper genetics.
  • Genetic testing of hair follicles offers a reliable method for confirming the diagnosis.
