Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate smoking habits among patients diagnosed with collagenous colitis (CC).
  • To determine if smoking influences the clinical course and disease activity of CC.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 116 patients with CC (median age 62 years, 92% female) completed questionnaires on demographics, smoking status, and disease activity.
  • Smoking habits of CC patients were compared against data from the general Swedish population.

Main Results:

  • CC patients exhibited a significantly higher prevalence of smoking (37%) compared to controls (17%, p < 0.001).
  • Younger adults (16-44 years) with CC showed a markedly higher smoking rate (75%) versus controls (15%, p < 0.001).
  • Smokers were diagnosed with CC over a decade earlier (median age 42) than non-smokers (median age 56, p < 0.003), with all smokers having initiated before disease onset. No significant difference in active disease was observed, though smokers trended towards more active treatment (42% vs. 17%).

Conclusions:

  • Smoking is identified as a significant risk factor for developing collagenous colitis (CC).
  • Smokers are predisposed to an earlier onset of CC, typically more than 10 years prior to non-smokers.
