Background:

Cancer and its treatments significantly impact patients' quality of life, influencing clinical decisions.
Health-related quality of life (HRQL) is a subjective measure, posing challenges for consistent assessment and intervention evaluation.
The Patient Generated Index (PGI) was developed to address HRQL measurement variability by focusing on patient-identified life domains.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate patient understanding and the response process of the Patient Generated Index (PGI).
To assess the extent to which the PGI captures participants' health-related quality of life (HRQL).
To provide recommendations for improving the PGI's validity, reliability, and usability.

Main Methods:

Cognitive interviews were employed to gather in-depth information on patient experiences with the PGI.
Participants discussed their comprehension of PGI questions and their response generation process.
Interviews explored how well the PGI reflected their individual HRQL.

Main Results:

Cognitive interview data provide strong support for the content validity of the PGI.
The PGI adequately samples individual HRQL by allowing patients to define their own impacted life areas.
