Background:

  • Cerebral palsy (CP) is a complex neurological disorder affecting movement and posture.
  • Understanding its epidemiologic risk factors is crucial for prevention and intervention strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and estimate the significance of various epidemiologic risk factors associated with the development of cerebral palsy.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 587 individuals with cerebral palsy and 1,154 controls.
  • Data collection through linkage to perinatal repositories, CP registers, and maternal questionnaires.

Main Results:

  • Significant risk factors identified include: maternal infection during pregnancy (OR 1.55), small for gestational age (OR 11.75), preterm birth <32 weeks (OR 59.20), multiple birth (OR 6.62), family history of CP (OR 1.61), breech presentation (OR 2.48), bleeding during pregnancy (OR 2.04), male sex (OR 1.68), multiple miscarriage (OR 2.30), smoking (OR 1.37), and illicit drug use (OR 2.22).
  • Factors not associated with CP included: disappearing twin, diabetes, maternal BMI, hypertension, alcohol consumption, anemia, hypothyroidism, assisted delivery, and maternal age.

Conclusions:

  • Preterm birth, intrauterine growth restriction, perinatal infection, and multiple birth are the most significant risk factors for cerebral palsy.
  • Common infections like upper respiratory or gastrointestinal infections during pregnancy were not found to be associated with CP.
