Summary

Medical simulation training significantly boosts medical students' confidence and performance in vaginal delivery procedures. This hands-on approach proved more effective than traditional lectures for improving examination scores.

Background:

  • Medical students require effective training for performing vaginal deliveries.
  • Traditional lecture-based methods may not fully prepare students for clinical practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of simulation training on medical students' confidence and competence in performing vaginal deliveries.

Main Methods:

  • Medical students were randomized to receive either a traditional lecture or a lecture plus hands-on vaginal delivery simulation.
  • Confidence was assessed using questionnaires at baseline and 4 weeks post-training.
  • End-of-rotation examination scores were compared between groups.

Main Results:

  • Simulation training significantly increased immediate post-training confidence in performing vaginal deliveries (P<.01).
  • While confidence differences diminished over time, simulation participants achieved higher oral (P=.004) and written (P=.009) examination scores.

  • Obstetric simulation training is a valuable tool for enhancing medical students' confidence and academic performance.
  • Simulation-based education offers a superior method for improving knowledge and skills in vaginal delivery compared to didactic lectures.
