Summary

Starvation induces oosorption, the resorption of oocytes, in the parasitic wasp Pteromalus puparum. During starvation, ovarian vitellin decreases as yolk spheres transfer out of oocytes into the hemolymph.

Area of Science:

  • Insect reproductive biology
  • Endoparasitic wasp physiology

Background:

  • Oosorption, the resorption of oocytes, is a poorly understood process in insects, often triggered by environmental stress.
  • While observed in some insect species, the precise mechanisms of oosorption remain largely unknown.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the mechanisms of oosorption in the endoparasitic wasp Pteromalus puparum under starvation conditions.
  • To elucidate the physiological changes associated with oosorption in response to nutritional stress.

Main Methods:

  • Quantification of hemolymph vitellogenin and ovarian vitellin using sandwich ELISA.
  • Ultrastructural observation of mature oocytes to analyze changes in yolk content.
  • Comparative analysis of protein levels in hemolymph and ovaries of starved versus fed wasps.

Main Results:

  • Starved P. puparum showed significantly decreased levels of ovarian vitellin and total protein 48 hours post-eclosion.
  • Hemolymph levels of vitellogenin and total protein increased in starved wasps.
  • Ultrastructural analysis revealed the transfer of protein and lipid yolk spheres out of oocytes in starved females.

Conclusions:

  • Oosorption in P. puparum involves the transport of vitellin from oocytes to the hemolymph.
  • This study provides insights into the physiological mechanisms underlying oosorption in insects during starvation.
