Definition
An exercise stress test measures the heart's response to exertion using a treadmill or stationary bicycle. Chest electrodes record the heart's electrical activity through an ECG, and blood pressure is monitored regularly.

Summary

Regular exercise during pregnancy did not significantly reduce the risk of postnatal depression for all women. However, it showed a benefit for women new to exercise, lowering their risk of postpartum mood disorders.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the efficacy of a structured exercise program during pregnancy in reducing the incidence of postnatal depression.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 855 pregnant women was conducted.
  • The intervention group participated in a 12-week aerobic and strengthening exercise program.
  • The control group received standard antenatal care, with PND assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) three months postpartum.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in EPDS scores (≥10 or ≥13) was observed between the exercise and control groups overall.
  • A statistically significant reduction in high EPDS scores (≥10) was found in the subgroup of women who were new to exercise and participated in the intervention (p=0.03).

Conclusions:

  • Routine exercise during pregnancy may not universally prevent postnatal depression.
  • Exercise interventions may be particularly beneficial for women with no prior exercise history in mitigating PND risk.
