Adding sevoflurane during preoxygenation effectively prevents pain from propofol injection. This method, combined with lidocaine and a tourniquet, achieved 100% pain relief in patients undergoing anesthesia.
Area of Science:
- Anesthesiology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Propofol injection commonly causes pain, necessitating strategies to mitigate this adverse effect.
- Various methods, including lidocaine and tourniquets, are used to reduce propofol injection pain.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of adding 3% sevoflurane during preoxygenation for alleviating pain associated with propofol injection.
Main Methods:
- A randomized single-blinded study involving 100 patients allocated to five groups: sevoflurane-lidocaine-tourniquet (SLT), sevoflurane-lidocaine (SL), lidocaine-tourniquet (LT), lidocaine (L), and sevoflurane (S).
- Patients received midazolam and fentanyl pretreatment before a full induction dose of propofol.
- Pain and hand movements during propofol injection were assessed by a blinded anesthesia nurse.
Main Results:
- The SLT group achieved 100% pain-free status with no hand movements.
- Significant pain reduction was observed in the SLT group compared to the lidocaine (L) and sevoflurane (S) alone groups.
- While SLT and SL groups showed no significant difference in pain, SLT demonstrated a significant reduction in hand movements compared to S.
Conclusions:
- Combining 3% sevoflurane with preoxygenation and the lidocaine-tourniquet method completely eliminated pain during propofol injection.
- Sevoflurane alone provided analgesia comparable to lidocaine premixed with propofol.
