Summary

Saccadic adaptation, crucial for eye movement accuracy, shows distinct transfer patterns between targeting and exploring saccades. Targeting saccade adaptation doesn't transfer to exploring saccades, but exploring saccade adaptation can transfer to targeting saccades.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Ophthalmology
  • Motor Control

Background:

  • Saccadic adaptation is essential for maintaining accurate eye movements.
  • Targeting saccades (gaze to a target) adapt via intra-saccadic step procedures using position error feedback.
  • Exploring saccades (object exploration) resist this but adapt to stimulus size changes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the transfer of saccadic adaptation between targeting and exploring saccades.
  • To determine if adaptation learned for one saccade type influences the other.
  • To explore the role of stimulus size in saccadic adaptation.

Main Methods:

  • Two experiments were conducted, adapting targeting and exploring saccades separately using appropriate procedures.
  • Targeting saccades were performed towards isolated and spatially extended stimuli.

  • Adaptation transfer between the two saccade types was measured.
  • Main Results:

    • Adaptation of targeting saccades did not transfer to exploring saccades.
    • Adaptation of exploring saccades transferred to targeting saccades when the target was spatially extended.
    • No transfer occurred when targeting saccades aimed at isolated targets.

    Conclusions:

    • Saccadic adaptation involves distinct motor planning modes for exploring versus targeting stimuli.
    • Size errors, in addition to position errors, can drive saccadic adaptation.
    • The nature of the target (isolated vs. extended) influences adaptation transfer.
