Summary

Multiple glomus tumors, or glomangiomas, present diagnostic challenges due to their extradigital location and potential for regrowth after excision. Early recognition is key for effective management of these vascular tumors.

Background:

  • Glomus tumors are vascular neoplasms originating from glomus cells.
  • Solitary and multiple glomus tumors exhibit distinct clinical and histopathological characteristics.
  • The multiple glomus tumor (glomangioma) is less common and poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.

Observation:

  • A 40-year-old patient presented with a 20-year history of numerous disseminated blue papules.
  • A previously excised lesion recurred and became painful, with histological confirmation of glomangioma.
  • Surgical resection was performed on nodular and painful lesions.

Findings:

  • Glomus tumors can be difficult to diagnose clinically when multiple and located outside the digits.
  • Subungual glomus tumors are typically painful and easier to suspect.
  • Recurrence of glomus tumors at the excision site is possible.

Implications:

  • Increased awareness of multiple glomus tumors is crucial for timely diagnosis.
  • Extradigital glomus tumors require consideration in differential diagnosis for skin lesions.
  • Understanding recurrence patterns aids in surgical planning and patient counseling.
